Thanks for the memories, City of Heroes

by on Mar.21, 2012, under City of Heroes

Thanks for the memories, City of Heroes. I have played for the better part of five years. I am not going to pay for another power set. I am a VIP, I pay $14.99 a month to play. Today if I want to play Beast Mastery, I have to spend paragon points. I have had enough. I am guessing over the years I have spent $800 or $900 on your game. I have always supported it, and enjoyed it. You are selling off this game, one costume piece, and power set at a time. It is shameful. If I pay to play the game each month, I should not have to pay for any power sets , or zones. Yes, I get paragon points, but I should not have to spend them on power sets. So that is it for me. Thanks for the memories.

City of Heroes, has jumped the shark.

by on Jan.24, 2012, under City of Heroes

Today is the day that City of Heroes, jumped the shark. You can purchase the Coyote travel power. Yes for a mire 600 paragon points, you can transform yourself into not a normal coyote, but a wily coyote to bound over the prairie, or pavement with. All I need is the road runner, and an actual prairie to run in, and this travel power might just be useful. It amazes me how many useless things Pargaon has developed, now that they can sell it off one piece at a time. I might have purchased it, but I have to spend my monthly paragon points on power sets, despite my VIP payment of $14.99 a month. So for me, with this useless travel power, it is official, this is the beginning of the end. City of Heroes has officially jumped the shark.

The good, the bad and the ugly for 2011

by on Jan.06, 2012, under General Gaming Discussion

The good
1. City of Heroes finally has an endgame.
2. Finally, after playing World of Warcraft for over three years, joined a raid, via the new looking for raid tool. It was fun, not a PUG disaster.
3. SWTOR finally made it to my desktop. I don’t think it is a WOW killer, but it does look like a pretty good game.

The bad
1. After paying $14.99 a month to be a VIP member of City of Heroes, I still have to use paragon points to buy power sets. As a VIP I should get all the power sets and content. My paragon points should be used for costume parts, or emotes, not game content
2. I did not get one character, in any MMO I play to the max level this year, which is a bad gaming year.
3. I really do not see any games on the way in 2012 that I am really excited about. ( It looks like Guild Wars 2 will not be here until 2013.)
The Ugly
1. It has been the year of the hacker. I have received too e-mails this year letting me know that my credit card information has been compromised.
2. Some games are not going to end in 2012, because they have done nothing in 2011 to update, or improve their game. Champions Online, Warhammer Online, are just a few game that might not see the end of 2012.

Let’s see how I did with my 2011 Crystal ball.

by on Dec.30, 2011, under General Gaming Discussion

Here is last year’s crystal ball, let’s see how I did

1. Free to play will start to lose its appeal. I know it has been the trend of 2010. It is not really free to play, how far you can get in Lord of the Rings without spending a few bucks. Champions online, with its limited power sets will get old pretty fast (lets face it Champions online with all the power sets gets pretty old fast.) Everyone seems to think Star trek online is next free to play, I predict it will not go free to play.

Wrong and more wrong, everything is going free to play, bummer, I hate it. Perfect example is City of Heroes , game has been divided and sold off in pieces. Even as a VIP, I have to buy power sets.

2. My World of Warcraft guild will not break level 10 this year. It is small, and we do not like drama. We are currently at level 1 right know, and only half way to level 2. So do the math, unless they change the XP amount a character can earn, we will not make it to level 10. No one will want to join our merry band in about a month or so, and who could blame them, we will not have any perks to offer them.
We are only five percent away from level 5 still a pretty small guild, would be nice to get a little larger this year.

3. I will get a second character to level 85 in World of Warcraft. See number 2, in my quest to get my guild to level 2, I will level another character in search of more guild XP.

Did not make it, my DK is at 84, and I have a PVP warrior on the horde side that is about to break 80.

4. New games, Tera will be an Aion clone, looks good, lots of grinding. Star Wars Old Republic will not make it out of the box until 2012; I mean it is already pushed back to November, so what is one more month. DC Universe will be the surprise game of the year; who does not want to fight with Superman.

Tera is still on the drawing board. Fighting with Superman was not as cool as it looked. DC did not live up to expectations.

5. I will not spend more then $25.00 on all those darn Steam games they put on sale all year.

LOL, not even close, those sales are just too hard to past up.

6. I will defeat Malistaire in Wizards 101, with the help of my two young wizard sons.

We took him down over the summer, was an awesome fight.

7. I will level characters to the max level in Fallen Earth, STO, Wizards 101, and Lord of the Rings Online.

Not even close. In fact, I did not have one character this year make it to the max level.

8. I will try Age of Conan, and DDO again and finally decide I like these games.

Age of Conan, I did play again, DDO, I did not, it is on my to do list for this year.

9. I will play more PVP in World of Warcraft and get a good set of PVP gear. I will also join a raid this year.

I started a horde warrior and have leveled him only playing PVP, he is about to break 80. I also did join a raid using the new raid finder.

10. The Rams will make the playoffs; the Cardinals will win the World Series. (oops wrong blog.)

If I had only put some money on the Cardinals in late August, I would be rich.

11. I will finally make enough gold to purchase one of those overpriced houses in Lord of the Rings.

Nope, did not play Lord of the rings much this year .

12. Blizzard will tell us nothing about their next MMO, Titan, leaving it to the forum trolls to dream up all sorts of crazy ideas. (without using their real names.)

Nope, had heard nothing about Titan this year.

13. I will finally get Loremaster on Steadyc my primary in World of Warcraft.

LOL, not even close.

14. City of Heroes will experience a lot of growth in 2011 with its new incarnate system.

Not really sure about his one. Population was pretty good for awhile, but has dropped back to normal as of late. The SWTOR effect.

15. My Gaming Community, Combat Engineers will actually have more then 10 active members.

We still only have a good core of five players, but we are always looking for more.

16. I will win the lottery, and purchase one of those cool computer gaming stations, with the maddest gaming computers every made.

I did not win the lottery, but I did upgrade my computer this year.

17. I will learn my lesson, and figure out I do not have a clue, and will stop writing this silly predictions next year.

Not likely, in fact, I need to write more on my blog this year, it was just a busy year last year.

City of Heroes, Issue 21 Convergence

by on Oct.26, 2011, under City of Heroes

Issue 21 Convergence has been out for a while. City of Heroes went free to play. I am a long time player of City of Heroes, so I was on the fence as to how I feel about City of Heroes going free to play. I understand why they went free to play. The game is seven years old, it needed to do something. I was just not sure that I was going to like it. Personally, I fell like they have sliced up the game and are selling to me piece by piece, and I don’t care for it.
The game population seems to be larger. It is hard to tell, because most free players cannot chat in broadcast. The new story arcs are well done, I am not sure if I was not a VIP if I would pay extra for them. The new Halloween map is different. The underground trail is very well done, and I enjoy running it. The new starting zone is a huge improvement over the old tutorial. So for the most part, Issue 21 has been pretty good.

I will always be a VIP, I will pay the monthly fee. I have invested too much time and energy over the years to not be a VIP. Here is my biggest problem with Issue 21. If I am paying a monthly fee, I should have access to all power sets, and content. I don’t like the fact that I have to use paragon points to purchase power sets. Yes, I get 400 a month, but I should not have to spend those on power sets, or content. That is why I am a VIP. I should get everything the game has to offer. My points should be used for extras, like costume pieces, or emotes, not power sets.

So I give Issue 21 a B+, it would be higher if they would include all the power sets to VIP players.

To chat, or not to chat

by on Sep.30, 2011, under City of Heroes

This week City of Heroes finally went free to play. So far, I have to say, it all looks pretty good. There just seems to be one problem for a lot of people. If you are a free player, you can only use team, or local chat. This works for me.
First, I do not want real money traders invading the game again. If you have played City of Heroes for a few years, real money trading tells were a problem a few years back. They did not nice job of stopping this with some nice restrictions on trial accounts. I don’t want it to be easy for free to play players to communicate. They have nothing good to say. Want a preview, check out the help channel. The channel is full of freebie players whining about this, and that, and trashing my game.

If you check out the forums (something I do not do very often), it gets even worse. Players complaining that they cannot talk to their friends that they have finally gotten to try City of Heroes. How it drives them away from the game. That they cannot join a team, because they cannot send tells, or chat in broadcast. Here is my solution. Spend five bucks to unlock the channels. Yes, five dollars is all it takes to be able to chat. If you do not have five bucks, go back to Runes of Magic, or whatever free gold spammer game you were playing.

So far Paragon is sticking to their guns. They have made it clear that they are not going to allow free players to use broadcast, or send tells. Yes, more power to them. I think they do not go far enough. I hate broadcast chat. I hate all the profanity, and stupidity you see in broadcast chat. Think it does not go far enough. I think if you type any profane word, and sent it out over broadcast chat; the game should log you out for an hour. That would stop a lot of broadcast chat stupidity. Don’t start that freedom of speech on me either. If you stood up in the middle of a public place and say some of the things I have seen in Broadcast chat, you would be asked to leave. Why is the virtual world different then the real world. Check out the that user agreement you agree to every time you log in. It amazes me that they spend all that time drafting the agreement, and making sure you agree to it every time you play, and spend no time enforcing it.

So I am glad that Paragon is taking a hard line on freebie accounts, and restricting their chat. It is the right thing to do.

Steady General Ice Armor – Energy Melee Tank

by on Sep.28, 2011, under City of Heroes

Steady General is an Ice/Energy melee tank. Right now he hangs out on the Exalted server, not sure if he is going to stay there. He was a character that I leveled up with a weekly SG group that only ran AE missions. We did not farm, each week we would try to find interesting AE missions to run. It was actually a pretty fun way to level up.

My original thought was to make him a PVP character; I have just not had the time or the energy. I would still like to do that, but I am pretty much a PVP lightweight. So if you have a good PVP build, or any ideas, post something.

This is what I believe is a pretty good PVE build. I am not sure about Spring Jump, one description stated it had knockdown, another said knockdown. If it has any knockback, it is gone, because that is of no use to a tank.

As usual, any thoughts, or ideas, post away.
